The second roundtable of the «Women and Girls»

On Monday, August 10, as a part of preparing recommendations of the “Women and Girls” working-group, the second online roundtable “Overcoming the consequences of the pandemic: a women’s perspective” was held.

Opening remarks were made by Victoria Panova, Managing director of the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research, Scientific Supervisor of the BRICS Russian Organizing Committee Expert Council, Vice President for International Relations of Far Eastern Federal University, Chair of the Primorsky regional branch of the Women’s Union of Russia. The event was chaired by Inga Legasova, Chairperson of the NGO “Union of Women’s Forces”, Nataliya Zaiser, Chair and Founder of Africa Business Initiative Union, and Pam Rajput, Chair of the High-Level Committee on the Status of Women

The roundtable was attended by 40 experts, and 8 reports were presented, that covered the wide range of issues on women’s agenda of the BRICS: decreasing incomes, unemployment, off-the-book employment and unpaid work for women in Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa; proportional participation of women in governance in the private and public sectors; issues of small and medium-sized women’s enterprises; the response of women-led organizations to COVID-19 challenges; expansion of women’s rights in the economic sector, issues of including women in digitalization processes.

The reports also included recommendations on the topic of the conference. Based on them, the draft of the position paper of the “Women and Girls” working group of the Civil BRICS is to be finalized. The paper is to become a part of recommendations for the BRICS leaders.

Further work on the design of recommendations from the BRICS Civil Forum to the BRICS leaders is to continue. In August 2020, five more online events are planned for holding: the conference “The Role of BRICS Countries Municipalities in the Future Digital Development of Countries”, round tables – “Smart elements in complex systems: best practices for advanced development in cities and rural areas in the post-crisis era,” “The BRICS countries and the issue of access to a vaccine against Covid-19,” “International cultural cooperation to strengthen the unity of the BRICS”.
